How Much Does Custom Web App Development Cost in 2026?

What actually drives the price of a custom web app, what focused builds cost, and how to get a fixed quote instead of an open-ended estimate.

The short answer: a focused custom web app from a small studio starts in the low thousands of dollars, and a large platform with many user roles and integrations can run well into five or six figures. The range is that wide because “web app” covers everything from a single booking workflow to a full marketplace.

This guide explains what moves the number, shows real fixed prices, and gives you a way to get a quote you can hold a team to.

What you are actually paying for

Custom web app development cost is mostly a function of how much has to be designed, built and tested. Hosting and tools are a small part of the bill. The main cost drivers are:

  • Scope. The number of screens, workflows and features. This is the single biggest factor.
  • Business logic. Pricing rules, approvals, scheduling, calculations. Logic that is easy to describe can still take time to build and test properly.
  • Integrations. Payment processors, CRMs, accounting tools, email and SMS services, and any third-party API the app has to talk to.
  • User roles and permissions. An app with customers, staff and admins is three interfaces, not one.
  • Existing data. Moving records out of spreadsheets or an old system adds migration and clean-up work.

What focused builds cost

Most agencies quote hourly, which makes it hard to compare prices. We publish fixed packages for custom web app development, so here are real numbers:

PackageFixed priceDeliveryRevisions
Regular$8007 to 10 days2
Gold$1,80010 to 14 days3
Diamond$3,50014 to 21 days4

These cover focused builds: a specific workflow, a backend with a REST API, a payment flow, or an integration between tools you already use. Anything larger is scoped on a discovery call and quoted as a fixed price before work starts.

Fixed price or hourly?

Hourly billing puts the risk on you. If the work takes longer than estimated, the invoice grows. A fixed price puts the risk on the team, which means they have to understand the scope before they commit to it.

The trade-off is that a fixed price needs a written scope. If a studio will give you a fixed number without writing down exactly what is included, expect arguments later about what counts as a change.

Costs outside the build

Budget for these separately, because they are billed by other companies or continue after launch:

  • Hosting and domain. A monthly or yearly fee that depends on traffic and the stack.
  • Third-party services. Payment processors take a percentage of each transaction, and email, SMS and mapping services usually charge by usage.
  • Maintenance. Security updates, dependency upgrades and small fixes.
  • New features. Most apps keep growing after version one. Plan for a second phase.

How to get an accurate quote

You will get a tighter number, faster, if you send these five things:

  1. The goal in one or two sentences. What should the app let someone do that they cannot do today?
  2. Who uses it. List each type of user and what they need.
  3. What it has to connect to. Payments, your CRM, existing databases, other software.
  4. What is essential for launch and what can wait for a later phase.
  5. Your deadline, if there is one.

A clear brief is the cheapest way to reduce cost. Vague scope is what turns a $3,000 project into a $9,000 one.

Is a custom web app the right call?

Not always. If an existing product already does what you need, it is usually cheaper to subscribe than to build. Custom makes sense when the workflow is specific to your business, when you are paying for several tools that do not talk to each other, or when the software itself is what you sell. We cover that decision in custom software vs off-the-shelf SaaS.
